CERAMIC COATING PROCESS BREAK DOWN
Why Are Ceramic Coatings So Expensive? To better understand ceramic coating prices, it’s important to understand what is required when applying a coating properly. By the way… I attached a video for those who prefer to follow along and listen, enjoy!
Step 1: Ceramic Coating Preparation (Brief overview)
Before installing a ceramic coating, and before doing ANYTHING for that matter, we have to ensure that the paint is not only clean, but completely stripped bare! This requires a little more than simple car washing. During the paint stripping and decontaminating phase we walk through 5 major ceramic coating preparation stages:
‘The pre-wash wash’ where we remove as much surface dirt from the vehicle as possible without touching the paint. ‘Traditional car washing’ which is exactly what you think! After surface dirt removal, it’s time for us to wash the paint the way you did when you were a kid! Well… not exactly, we use better chemicals, better technique, and special processes, but you get the idea!
‘Iron decontamination phase.’ If you’re not from the detailing world, that phrase means nothing to you. Most people aren’t aware of the tiny contaminants that sit on your car’s paint that are not removed through the washing process. These microscopic contaminants are single handedly responsible for long term paint DAMAGE! We’ve got the chemicals to remove them! Nearing the end we move into
‘Clay barring’ the paint. After you wash your car… run your hand across the paint. What do you feel? Likely not a smooth surface, but rather a surface that LOOKS CLEAN and yet is bumpy like sandpaper. The clay bar phase of our ceramic coating preparation process allows us to remove any and all of the final contaminants that are embedded in the paint leaving a smooth and glassy surface behind that you’ve likely never felt on your car. Last but not least we move into the
‘final wipe down & solvent removal’ stage. This phase is exactly what it sounds like. We use a specific type of chemical that will remove any last minute oils, residues, waxes, or any other chemical that is left on the surface of the paint.
Step 2: Paint Correction & Enhancement
Now that the vehicle's paint has been exfoliated & stripped clean, we now level the clear coat from surface-level defects/scratches/swirls! Because ceramic coatings have come so far through science, it's still considered to be the most durable form of protection, offering an elevated glossy shine finish. Therefore, any little imperfection that is in the paint is there to stay as soon as the coating is applied (hence why this stage is very important, especially before applying a long-term/lifetime coating).
As most of us already know, Here in the Mid-West- we're fortunate to experience 4 season changes within 12 months. Compliments of rain, sleet, ice, snow, hail, storms, pollen, bugs, and so much more have proven already to have a damaging impact on our "reliable transportation"! For that reason, it’s necessary to go through a paint correction/enhancement- before coating the surface with protection. For optimal product performance, radiant aesthetic appearance, and overall satisfaction. This stage is crucial in the removal of paint imperfections, and to ensure a smooth surface that the coating can easily bond.
How we decide whether it's right for you...
Paint enhancement- The most common "less extreme" form of correcting, focused on reviving & polishing the exterior paint by delicately removing micro-layers of clear coat at a time that creates a radiant smooth finish. This process of resetting the surface appearance- stripping away irregular surface level defects, blemishes, and light scratches & swirls.
Typical your local "CAR WASH DRIVE THRU SERVICES" is known to be the perpetrator for your paint's swirl marks. Because of this, paint enhancement "polishing" is the common practice performed in order to replenish that surface again...
Paint correction- This comes in the form of compounding & polishing. Compounding is deep aggressive cutting in the clear coat surface, this stage is critical because you don't want to go too deep and damage anything. Thanks to science, excellent products are available now that help detailers - letting the product do most of the work! This is used in severe cases. Afterward, it's followed up with POLISHING to smooth away aggressive cuts from the previous step. Experience goes a long way in understanding what's happening during these transitional phases. Overall, "Paint Corrections" are nothing more than aggressive "Paint Enhancement".
Do I need a paint correction before a ceramic coating?
The simple answer is: Yes & No. Ok… maybe it’s not so simple. We have many customers who understand the importance of paint corrections, and how vital this is before applying any form of protection. Therefore it's highly recommended when applying a new ceramic coating. On the other hand, we do have some who choose not to get any corrections done because they want a lower price, which is understandable...
Note- While there are situations when paint correction is necessary, there are also situations where it can be optional, and we love talking it through with our customers regarding the difference (Personally this is a case-by-case situation and every vehicle including the owner is different) once we've personally evaluated the vehicle thoroughly, reviewed package options, we then make a decision and documented in writing before moving forward (signed & dated). Trust me, I've had to learn the hard way a couple of times already!
Keep in mind when it comes to getting the most from your ceramic products... We always recommend at least a surface-level paint enhancement polish to help extend the life of your new ceramic coating (and avoid any issues of potentially voiding the warranty that may be attached to the product)
Step 3: Ceramic Coating Application
After all of that… It's now time to install our ceramic coating. You know how a surgeon goes to school for 8-12 years before they ever cut into an actual person? Most of the work is in the PREP! That is a great way to understand ceramic coatings. While there is a lot of technical skill included with the process for optimal results… most of the time & labor is done in the preparation! Ceramic coating installations take a few hours, depending on the size of the vehicle... but the preparation takes ALL other hours. Depending on the amount of paint correction done, a ceramic coating installation can take somewhere between 1 to 3 days depending on steps required to obtain results agreed on between the client and specialist performing service. We hope this shed light on why ceramic coatings come with these price tags… and don't forget, system x comes with Carfax registration, warranty when maintaining yearly visits applying a revived top coating
